Safety image of my truck looking good, horrific rust gore to follow.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being terminal) how bad is it?

Eh, maybe a 3 or a 4. Definitely fixable.

That’s good! I’ve not had much experience with rust. It will just take $$$.

I’d give it a 6. It doesn’t look like a super easy plug in like a floor board, and might require some tricky body work to do it right, but someone with experience should be able to pull it off and fix it. It’s certainly not terminal, but it will require new paint.

Look on the bright side... your truck is turning itself into a Lotus!

On 1-10 I’d say 4 or 5, since it’s visible it will take more work (and paint) as compared to an inner panel or a floor, but patches for those areas should be readily available and a fairly common job (most trucks rust in the cab corners and bedside)

Just bear in mind that rust is like fungus...you only see the fruiting bodies. That said... I’ve had worse than that patched.

Make sure you take it somewhere reputable. Improper repairs rust faster than if you would of never touched it.

The truck has lived this long and only has that much, it’s fine. I have rust on my bed rails and it seriously freaked me out, then I remembered it’s almost 40 years old.

2/10. My Jag is a 7/10 which consists of various rust bubbles on the body and the floors are completely gone.

Surprisingly not bad for a D-series in a snow region.

We don’t really get snow here actually and I don’t DD it.

That being said, it is from Edmonton which is a hella snow region

I’d say a solid 5. It needs attention, but they aren’t gaping holes in the body. The good thing is the patch panels are readily available from LMC Truck.

Looks good from 20 feet. it’s the right amount to just accept and leave alone. (like iceberg only 10% is visible on the surface) That’s a good looking honest truck, if you go looking for rust you will find it.

Yeah, its not top priority to fix. If the panels gotta be replaced, might as well let it rot a little more and buy other things.

thanks! I love my truck

The friend I’m helping with the vega is actually a D-truck guy, drives an 80 stepside slant6 and has a matching 80 fleetside shorty. These are the same as ford/chev of the period for rust. rockers/cabcorners, driver’s floor and rear wheel arches. the front fenders on these dodges tend not to rot as they let mud and grass fall out the bottom. But as my buddy is doing, you can collect rust free bits one by one if you’re patient. Dodge Truck guys aren’t like dealing “unobtainium mopar gold” guys. they’re more practical and down to earth, like an old D truck.

I’ve certainly seen trucks where entire sections of the body were completely missing. Just rusted away entirely. So while bad, it could be worse haha. You can cut/grind some of it away and put some paint on it if you want. But really you might as well just ignore it until the truck rusts into the ground. My Miata was rusty like this and has since been repaired but that took months and some money to fix.

Kinja'd!!!

this is my baby, Made in Japan and rusted in Winnipeg, like rusted in half, more than once. like it has rot in the middle of the a pillars and the window frames of the doors. Rot like: “now, the government of Saskatchewan doesn’t consider a rusted box on a truck a safety concern, but come on buddy, seriously?” (back half is homemade). Truck is good to go for another 30 years and I’ve loved it since it showed up at Grandpas place in red back in 85. It’s the only “car I’ve always wanted” But I know I can’t just take it apart and put it back together.

As long as the truck doesn’t break in half or you feet drag on the floor, it’s ok :)

Rust issues are overrated anyway

Catch it and fix it now, it will be a quick/easy fix (assuming you’re doing it yourself).

Let it go longer, you’ll be looking for new body parts. It’s why I’m driving mine around like this through this winter:

I think I may replace the panels anyway, they aren’t too expensive. Luckily this isn’t my DD, so it isn’t progressing too much. It’s had these rust holes for years.

I cut out the bad areas and welded in replacement panels.

I’ll be painting it this spring.

When I was stationed in Germany back in the late 80s, we GIs drove around in late-70s era German cars, cars that no self respecting German would be caught driving. But we had to get them inspected and the unibody frames had to have rust holes welded over and when we got our cars inspected, the inspector would go around with a screwdriver poking holds everywhere he could and we’d gasp and he’d be incredulous because there was no structural integrity there anyway and we’d still gasp.
